Installing git on Oracle Linux (Tikanga)

Here are the basic steps to install a command line git on your linux system. As a root user, issue the following commands:

cat /etc/redhat-release => Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.6 (Tikanga)
yum install curl-devel expat-devel gettext-devel openssl-devel zlib-devel
wget https://git-core.googlecode.com/files/git-1.9.0.tar.gz
tar -xvzf git-1.9.0.tar.gz
cd git-1.9.0
make prefix=/usr/local all
make prefix=/usr/local install

[oracle@uss git-1.9.0]# git --version
git version 1.9.0

This should be available for all your linux users defined in your system. I will use this with Jenkins to automated some admin task.
